Starting something new
Anything new can be overwhelming at times. From learning a new skill,
wanting to be more social or starting a new routine. All these things mean
we want to do an active transition. Now we all have natural transition occur
in our life like losing our first tooth, puberty or even losing a loved one.
Change happens in life. However, when we want to fully be engaged in
making the change one can wonder where do I start??
First let’s start with validating the emotions that you may feel as you
make this change. Emotions such as anxiety, fear, worry, excitement can all
be validated by understanding why it is there. Once it makes sense and that
emotion is not so overwhelming let’s start with these steps below:
1. Find your circle of support: Don’t be afraid to reach out to friends, family, or
professionals such as therapists, coaches or mentors.
2. Make a plan, If you are a visual person, then do a collage. If you are more
receptive to sound, then record your voice detailing the plan. Be creative!
3. Having realistic steps can allow you to move closer to your goal by keeping you accountable. This can look like making a to-do list for the day. Setting up calendar reminders.
4. Once you have completed your task for that day. Come to mindfulness. Be present with your progress.
5. Rome, Greece, New York City weren’t built in a day so pace yourself. Remember this is not going to be a trip but a journey.
6. Setbacks can happen. SO what did you learn? Then start again. Remember it is a journey.
The new thing you want to start will happen because you are moving one step at a time. Being present with every moment, witnessing your growth.
Growth hurts! The saying growing pains is so real! So, breathe and tackle the emotion of overwhelming one step at a time.
